President

 

Qualifications to be Hoofer Council President 

  • A general knowledge of the Hoofer philosophy and of the individual Hoofer clubs; or more importantly a desire to learn more about the clubs and the Wisconsin Union.
  • Must be a current student at the UW – Madison for the entirety of the term of office.

 

Hoofer Council President’s Duties 

  • The President of Hoofer Council is the Chief Executive Officer for the Wisconsin Hoofers and provides leadership and direction to the entire Hoofer organization.
  • Represent the Wisconsin Hoofers to the Wisconsin Union, the University of Wisconsin Madison, the City of Madison, the State of Wisconsin and the general public.
  • Attendance at the Hoofer Council Fall and Spring Retreats is mandatory for all members of Council.
  • Ten (10) hours of posted office hours per week.
  • Chair Hoofer Council Meetings
  • The Hoofer Council President is also a participating member of the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Student Programming Board.  As a member of WUD the president will participate in spring, summer, and fall training programs in addition to weekly meetings throughout the academic year.
  • Appoint Hoofer Council Chairs (with Council confirmation) to the Hoofer Council
  • Watch for and address risk management and legal issues of the Hoofer organization.
  • Update and revise position description and position guide as appropriate.
  • Meet regularly with Hoofer advisors
  • Participate in, volunteer for and support all-Hoofer and individual clubs’ major programs or fundraisers
  • Stay updated on all club happenings and upcoming events
  • Have a strong connection with Outdoor Programs Office staff
  • Sit on the Hoofers Design Advisory Group for the Union Building Project
  • If necessary, call the Hoofer-Union Liaison committee into existence
  • The President is one of the Hoofer Council execs.  The execs are responsible to accomplish the following:
  1. Act as a liaison between Hoofers and the rest of the Union including WUD.
  2. Attend weekly meetings with the Hoofer advisors and other Hoofer Execs.
  3. Set and send out the agenda for Hoofer Council meetings.
  4. Decide who will chair Hoofer Council meetings and perform other duties of the President in her/his absence.
  5. Decide who will attend Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) meetings in the event that the President cannot attend.
  6. Discuss and address new or pressing issues concerning Hoofers.
  7. Prepare goals and strategies for the year
  8. Periodically meet with club leaders and attend club meetings to provide support to affiliated clubs.
  9. Send a monthly e-mail update of the entire Hoofer organization to all Hoofer leaders.
  10. Sit on at least one Union Council sub-committee

  • Hoofer Council President is never required to pay the General Activity fee again.  

As a Wisconsin Union Directorate Member the Hoofer Council President is entitled to:

  • A tuition stipend as determined by Union Council
  • $50 a month (academic year) in the WisCard Union Meal account, free check cashing in the Unions, and reduced fees for Mini-courses.
  • A lifetime Union membership

Accountability

  • All Hoofer Council members abide by Wisconsin Union policies and the Hoofer Council Constitution.
  • The Hoofer Council President is accountable to all Hoofer clubs officers and general members.
  • The Hoofer Council President is accountable to the officers of the Wisconsin Union and to Union Council.

Time Commitment

  • Meeting times weekly:                  6-8 hours
  • “Office hours” weekly                  10 hours
  • Projects / planning monthly          10-18 hours
  • TOTAL TIME PER WEEK           25-30 HOURS average
